Agreed. Tweets that link to resources or services that will be helpful to someone in a specific niche are what I would generally focus on.

Tweets that directly promote your services not so much. There is so much spam really to weed through. Give people something that will help them and they will check out your Twitter profile and maybe follow you. That's where you can sell your services.

If you are trying to promote products, Twitter probably isn't the best place in most cases, in my opinion. Use other social media instead.

Judging from your thread-title i am assuming that you want to market via Twitter right?? Well, Twitter is not a complicated Social Media platform, but it takes grit to succeed with this platform! The difficulty with Twitter is that your tweets have a very short life. You will need to post very frequently to get in front of your target’s eyes. What you most definitely need is a good Twitter strategy...a strategy that will help you connect with your audience, your prospects and eventually turn fans into paying customers.
Ever heard of Analytics-Twitter? If not you might want to get more information here.
Once you have these pieces in place, the rest is easy when it comes to building a strong Twitter-for-your-business profile.

What are the most valuable tweets and what makes them so valuable?
If you have a valuable product/service that is time sensitive, then that is a good candidate.
You can capitalize on recent search engine, google trends or viral trends and events to pull your audience.
You want to provide relevant, recent, & useful information. For example:
  • What legislative rule affects me
  • What black-Friday deal should I look-out for
  • What is the newest fashion trend
  • What cosmetic line did the celebrity purchase
  • Who made the news
  • What is the newest gizmo
  • What activity is available for me (or my family) to attend
  • What give-aways are being offered by xyz
  • What is the perfect mother's/father's/valentine day gift
Of-course, all these must be in-context of your business.
For example, within education I may provide recent info with regards to test-prep deadlines, memory strategies to employ, brain exercising video/games, the affect of nutrition on studying, study skill strategies, etc
And of-course invite parents to join me for the on-site marketing, which will be promoted with my give-aways

The first and most important step is to understand exactly for which audience are you working and posting. Then it will be easier to post content/tweets, knowing of which subject is good there.

I think that tweeter is not that effective for generating sales or promoting any kind of products - I am using twitter more as a news feed tool.

I use twitter to build awareness of other sites with helpful information mingled with my own. The big question of what makes twitter valuable is more in area of information you share and with who. It does have trending topics for opportunity to join in a conversation and again, build awareness of your own services.

That's more-or-less how I use Twitter as well.

I think this helps build followers too. Some are related businesses, or interests but yeah, Twitter is like, 'I'll scratch your back if you scratch mine' not with claws mind you, but, that usual, give and take relationship, lol.
