Is it advisable to hire a consultant/business advisor even if you only have a medium-sized business? What are the benefits of hiring one and how do you pick the right one?

If you ask me the answer is definitely yes,
Getting help from someone that has already walked through the way that you wanna walk is always a good idea, imagine how much energy he can save you by simply explaining to you how to fix the problems you'll have on your way, I think its worth the money and it will help you to grow your business faster.

If you’ve never owned a business before, there’s a learning curve to running one and a business consultant can help you get ahead of that curve.

Definitely yes. There is a great benefit in having an Advisory Group or Group of Advisors (anything from 1 to 5 members) to provide missing skills, accountability and an external business perspective.
The range of options in how these can be used is wide. It is a cost and operationally effective addition to any SMB and will increase their chance of success. Less onerous than having non-executive directors but just as useful.
