    Hi all!

    My name is Tony and I am based in Johannesburg, South Africa and I look forward to learning and sharing with the community.

    I have been a small business owner for 16 years and am also involved with coaching and mentoring new home and small business start-ups, especially with the previously disadvantaged communities.

    I am the author of several eBooks including How to be Mentored and The Home Business owners start-up Guide, a 4 part series for new entrepreneurs.

    @tonyp , Welcome to entrepreneurfix.

    Just wondering how you can call a business 'small' or 'big' is it only by its result of earning or the potential.

    Thanks for the welcome. Business designations are often determined by legislation and could be based on number of employees or annual turnover. In my part of the world the Government (in terms of our local Companies Act) has decided that a "small business" employs between 100 and 500 staff. A Micro business is between 10 and 100 employees, and a Home business is just that - it operates from home, which provides certain tax benefits. I think Australia and the UK have similar breakdowns.

    According to Webopeadia the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), define it as follows:

    • Manufacturing: Maximum number of employees may range from 500 to 1500
    • Wholesaling: Maximum number of employees may range from 100 to 500
    • Services: Annual receipts may not exceed $2.5 to $21.5 million
    • Retailing: Annual receipts may not exceed $5.0 to $21.0 million
    • General and Heavy Construction: Annual receipts may not exceed $13.5 to $17 million
    • Special Trade Construction: Annual receipts may not exceed $7 million
    • Agriculture: Annual receipts may not exceed $0.5 to $9.0 million
      [Source: SBA's definition of a small business concern]
    Hope this helps!

    Thanks for sharing... and very interesting !!

    So some one else define / judge a firm small or big and we go along with it .... in giving that much of interest. And remain their or start in 'rat racing'.. don't you feel world is highly hypocritical ?

    Just a thought !
